Isometric drawings are not actual 3D drawings, they are made with 2D geometries but they appear like 3D. Isometric drawing in AutoCAD can be made by tilting viewing angle to. To Create 2D Isometric Circles. Products and versions covered. AutoCAD 2016, AutoCAD Architecture 2016, AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016, AutoCAD Electrical 2016, AutoCAD MEP 2016, AutoCAD Map 3D 2016, AutoCAD Mechanical 2016, AutoCAD P&ID 2016, AutoCAD Plant 3D 2016, AutoCAD Structural Detailing 2016, & AutoCAD Utility Design 2016. The tips given in this blog are quite interesting and informative. These are useful to understand how to make isometric dimension and text in autocad. Thanks for sharing this blog. I hope you will come up with more such informative blogs. A 2D isometric drawing is a flat representation of a 3D isometric projection. This method of drawing provides a fast way to create an isometric view of a simple design. Distances measured along an isometric axis are correct to scale, but because you are drawing in 2D, you cannot expect to extract other 3D distances and areas, display objects.
If you work in plant industry, then you might need to draw isometric drawings. If you use AutoCAD, you may wish you can do it easily. You can.
It’s not a 3D drawing, but 2D drawing by simply change your drawing orientation. You can do it by using snap, then change it’s style to isometric.
Command: SNAP
Specify snap spacing or [ON/OFF/Aspect/Style/Type] <10.0000>: S
Enter snap grid style [Standard/Isometric] <S>: I
Specify vertical spacing <10.0000>:

You can change your plane by typing ISOPLANE [enter] then select left, top, right.
In AutoCAD 2015
In newer AutoCAD version, we have ISODRAFT option. If you use AutoCAD 2015, you can access the option in drafting settings, AutoCAD status bar.
This will help you to quickly switch to isometric drafting mode, the icons really help!
Isometric Autocad Drawings
We can create isometric drawing by changing the snap style. It’s really helpful. However, what if you need to draw polygon in isometric drawing?
Lee Mac has an AutoLISP program to do this. As you can see below, you can quickly draw polygon in your isometric drawing. It’s not a 3D drawing, it’s a 2D drawing.
If you are interested, you can download the “isopoly” program here.
Using Isopoly
To use isopoly, you need to load the program to AutoCAD first. Refer to Lee’s guide to load AutoLISP program here.
After you load the program, change SNAPSTYL system variable to 1. Type SNAPSTYL then [enter]. Type 1 then [enter] again to accept the value.
You can cycle between isoplane by pressing F5 or type ISOPLANE on command line.
Lee also includes a short code to allow you quickly change SNAPSTYL using command line. Find it at the bottom of the download page.
If you are not familiar how to save that code to an AutoLISP program, read this guide saving: using and managing your AutoLISP program.

Lee has many great free AutoLISP program. If you never visit his site, check all these programs that you can download.
